Travel Advice for Sichuan.
The following travel advice for Sichuan (and applying to China as a whole) will help make your Chinese trip more enjoyable and satisfying.
Travel Health Insurance
One thing I strongly recommend is to get travel health insurance before you go to China.
I don't know whether local Chinese doctors and hospitals are expensive for foreigners.
But all the westerners I knew in Chongqing preferred to be treated by the western doctors (American, Canadian, Australian) who were part of the Global Doctor chain - western doctors that treat foreigners in China.
And they were expensive!
I had a couple of minor ailments but that still cost me $200 US which would cost me about $60 in Australia. If you are really sick they may evacuate you to Hong Kong and that would be really expensive!
So first piece of travel advice is get travel health insurance!
Travel Advice on Getting Around China
You will want to travel around Sichuan and probably other parts of China when you are there.
It is such a vast country with so many different things to see.
There is an extensive transport network in China.
You will most certainly (unless your Chinese is very good) need to use a travel agent or get some help from local Chinese friends.
You can get around by:
- air
- train
- bus
- boat
- car or minibus
China has undergone a massive construction in infrastructure in recent years. Consequently, there are many new modern airports, bus stations and highways.
The road in the following picture is typical of the modernization of the transport system you will encounter in Sichuan and the rest of China.
It is hard to believe but China's expressways ways and modern highways have only been constructed in the last 20 years.
I have travelled by bus on the expressway from Chongqing to Chengdu several times.
There are several long tunnels through mountains (the Chinese tend to go through rather than over mountains!) and very high bridges over deep ravines.
This is by no means unique - there are expressways and highways like this throughout Sichuan and China.
This rapid construction of transport infrastructure just illustrates the rapid growth of China.
The transport infrastructure is very good.
Surviving in China
China is a rapidly developing country. The culture and people are quite different to other parts of the world.
Surviving (meaning living to enjoy yourself in China) is not difficult as long as you take some basic steps.
If you are not sure about something ask someone. The challenge is asking someone who speaks adequate English. However, people are friendly and helpful.
I usually pick on a younger Chinese person who looks like a student or a professional.
Most times they have learnt some English and are happy to practice their English by helping.
The staff at the major hotels will also help.
Any English speaking Chinese will help. They consider it an honour and also they enjoy practising their English.
Ask other Westerners. Westerners travelling in China have an understanding of the problems you may have. They also are helpful.
You should consider at least the following travel advice:
- money
- health and hygiene
- accommodation
- news
