The Mighty Yangtze River.
The Yangtze River is one of the great rivers of the world!
The River starts in the mountains of Tibet fed by melting ice and snow.
It flows through Tibet and along the border of Sichuan.
The river continues its journey across China reaching the coast at Shanghai.
Numerous rivers and lakes empty into it on its journey making it a truly gigantic waterway.
The Yangtze is the third longest river in the world.
Chongqing
Chongqing is located on this great river. Another river, the Jialing, empties into it at Chongqing. In fact, much of Chongqing is on a peninsula between these two rivers.
These rivers makes a significant contribution commercially to Chongqing with the river traffic.
But they also provide Chongqing with its charm. Together with the surrounding mountains, it is a place of great senic beauty.
Many people come to Chongqing to start their river cruises.
Enjoy the restauarants and bars along the river at Nanbin Lu and look at the magnificent skyline of the CBD of Jeifangbei across the river - particularly at night.
On the south bank of the city (Nanping) is a long row of bars and restaurants.
Directly across the river is the skyline of the commercial center of Chongqing. It is a great view.
Enjoy an authentic Chinese meal and a drink while looking at the magnificent view.
Floating restaurants are very popular. Try a meal on one of the multi-decked ships that are restaurants.
Some of the boat restaurants are fixed in one spot. You walk out to them on wooden pontoons.
The standard is excellent. One I went to had four floors and elavators.
Other floating restaurants cruise up and down the river - providing a good meal and great views of the Chongqing skyline especially at night!
There are numerous bridges which are used by much of Chongqing's traffic.
There is a cable car across the river. You can get a majestic view of the river. However, at times it can be quite foggy which gives a different perspective of the river!
On some days Chongqing is quite foggy as this picture of the cable car shows.
Some of the fog is pollution but a large part of it is due to the geographical layout - two large rivers in a valley surrounded by mountains.
The fog is most prevalent in winter but can occur in summer as well. It gives quite a surreal effect.
River Cruises
Many people come to Chongqing as the departure point for a river cruise through the Three Gorges.
Chaotianmen is the port from which the cruise ships leave. It is at the junction of the two rivers.
There are several tour operators nearby to book your Yangtze River cruise.
