KTV and Karaoke
I saw many KTV signs in Chongqing inviting you to Karaoke.
Karaoke is a very popular form of entertainment for the Chinese. A night's entertainment for a group of Chinese is often in a Karaoke Bar.
Many Chinese people of all ages love to sing.
Many young Chinese people will go to karaoke bars for a night out. They will sing eat and drink.
A very popular chain of karaoke bars is KTV. You will see them in the big cities in Sichuan.
Older Chinese also join in often at a party or banquet.
Karaoke
Karaoke Bars are found in many different places. Many hotels have a karaoke bar which hotel guests and anyone else can use. Some Karaoke Bars are standalone nightclubs - usually very popular and noisy.
Even boats on the River Yangtze have karaoke bars!
The boat provides both food in the restaurant and karaoke entertainment. The Chinese often have a banquet in the restaurant usually with a lot of alcohol to ease any inhibitions about singing. Then they continue the night with karaoke.
KTV
These Karaoke signs are everywhere in Chongqing. It means that Karaoke is available there with a TV screen, music and lyrics on the screen. It is controlled by a computer and you display and select songs on the computer screen.
There are individual rooms which are hired for however long you want. Cost is per hour - usually about 60 yuan per hour.
Also food and drink are bought so that you can sing, eat, drink and even dance.
The waiters will bring in a crate of beer.
Don't worry - you don't have to drink it all! They the count the number of empty bottles at the end and charge you for that.
If you have Chinese friends, the chances are that they will take you to a Karaoke Bar. Most probably they will want you to sing. Most of the songs are in Chinese but there are some English songs as well.
It doesn't matter if you can't sing - as long as you try. They really appreciate the effort. You may end up dancing and playing games as well.
A good night out with Chinese people often is a good meal at a restaurant, followed by a massage and finishing in a Karaoke Bar. Chinese hotels will often provide all these facilities so you can do it all in one spot.
It is a great way of quickly making good friends with the Chinese.
It is also a part of doing business. The Chinese will do their business during the day and of course continue over dinner. But there comes a time when business ceases and relaxation starts - including karaoke.
So if you are doing business in Sichuan - my advice is to bring your singing voice as well!
