Chinese Poetry.

There have been many great writers of Chinese poetry.

Du Fu (712 - 770) is thought by many to be the greatest of them all. You can still read his poems.

You can see his restored house in Chengdu. It has been turned into a museum and a park. Du Fu enthusiasts from all over the world come here.

Du Fu came to Chengdu in 759 to escape from the An Shi Rebellion which was a major conflict engulfing much of China at the time.

However Sichuan was relatively peaceful at the time so Du Fu and his family spent some quiet years there. He wrote some of his best poetry during his stay in Chengdu.

Du Fus Thatched CottageDu Fu lived in a thatched cottage in the western suburbs of Chengdu. His cottage has been maintained and restored over the years.

Du Fu found peace and tranquility there and was able to write some of his best poetry in Chengdu.

Copies of his poetry are on display at his cottage.

Du Fus Cottage is set within a large botanical garden. There are beautiful gardens, lakes and walk ways. You could spend several hours just wandering around the beautiful gardens.

Statue of Du FuI just love places like Du Fu's cottage and Wenshu temple in Chengdu.

You can find peace and tranqulity amongst the hustle and bustle of this great Chinese city at places like these.

You may not be a poetry enthusiast but the beauty and peace of the gardens are woth the visit alone.

There are statues, a museum, a display of the poems of Du Fu and even a pagoda.

Chinese PagodaYou will find many pagodas throughout China. They are religious buildings associated with Buddhism and Taoism, often built near temples.

They have served many purposes including storage of religious materials and places of residence.

All of the structures in the Du Fu cottage area have been restored over many hundreds of years.

This pagoda has certainly been restored over time but it gives you a good idea of the structure of a pagoda in Du Fu's time.

Du Fu lived here over 1,200 years ago – a long time ago.

However, walking around Du Fu’s Cottage and the gardens, I had the feeling it was not so long ago. It was so well done and restored, you could really feel the time and life of Du Fu.

Return from Chinese poetry to Chengdu.
