Chinese news about the world!

Most probably you will want to keep up with the news back home.

Fortunately the Chinese news keeps you up to date with everything that is happening in the world.

Newspaper

There is a newspaper (the China Daily ) that is written in English which is quite good.

It is published every week day and on the weekend. It covers both Chinese and international affairs.

It is available in many hotels.

Television

There is an English speaking Chinese television station - CCTV 9.

It is very good for both local and international news.

Also satellite TV is available in many leading hotels - networks such as CCN and BBC can be seen.

For Australians in China, the Australian Network provides both television and radio services. Aussies (and others) can watch a wide range of Australian sport, drama, comedy and news. Radio Australia is also available.

Satellite TV provides a few other programs such as National Geographic and a couple of movie channels.

International hotels have satellite TV sometimes in hotel rooms and usually in the bars.

Some bars like Dee Dees in Chongqing and the Shamrock Bar in Chengdu have satellite TV.

When you tire of sightseeing, go for a nice cold beer and watch your favourite sport from home.

Internet

The Internet is wonderful!

I was able to read newspapers from Australia online as well as other countries.

Also I was able to listen to radio stations from all over the world.

Generally the Internet service was good and I didn't have any problems.

I was able to use MSN (Instant Messaging) to communicate with family and friends at home.

Skype worked as well.

There is certainly no reason why you can't keep up with what's happening back home.

Chinese News

I found the Chinese generally had a good understanding of what was happening in the world.

When I was there at the end of 2008, the Chinese I talked to knew all about the world economic recession and other issues such as the environment. They were very knowledgable.

Young people in particular have taken to using the Internet and looking at news and blog sites.

Friends of mine have set up an Internet site where the Chinese can express opinions about what is happening in China and the world.

Have a look at China Tells. It is written in both English and Chinese.

You will find interesting information about China you may not normally know - such as the real estate market, income distribution and even about the introduction of the Apple iPhone.

It makes for interesting reading and helps you understand what the issues in China are as seen by the Chinese.

Online Chinese Forums

There are some good online information sites run by the Chinese written in English. They often have a forum section where people, both Chinese and non-Chinese provide interesting information about China. This can be very useful for people travelling or living in China.

One of my favourites is Chinese-Tools.com. You will find lots of interesting Chinese news that you will not normally find in travel brochures - much of it written by the Chinese themselves.
