Having a massage is one of the delights in China - for both locals and foreigners.Chinese massages are very common. They are an accepted relaxtion activity practised by many Chinese - young and old.
Massages are often available in hotels - both Western and Chinese. Massage parlours often take up a whole floor.
Massages are available to both guests and non-guests.
You can have a single room by yourself or a room with several beds. You can have a group massage with your friends.
Often you can have a massage in your hotel room instead of going to the massage parlour.
Types of Chinese Massage
The types of massage vary from place to place.
A general Chinese body massage will concentrate evenly on feet, body and head.
A Chinese foot massage will concentrate heavily on the feet.
You may not like this if your feet are ticklish or sensitive.
The masseurs use fingers and knuckles quite forcefully. You can always tell them to take it easy!
The masseurs are usually young Chinese women but their hands and fingers are very strong. There usually is a small number of male masseurs if that is your preference. They are quite expert at their craft as well.
Other massages concentrate more on the head with soothing massaging of the face, eyes, scalp and neck.
Your arms and legs are also sure to get a good workout!
Other special tricks are used. You may have a bag of hot beads rubbed on your back and stomach or oil rubbed onto your feet.
Whatever it is - lie back and enjoy it. It is very relaxing!
Other massages
Massages are not only provided in hotels. They are often provided as part of a visit to the hairdresser.
As part of having your hair done, you will have your scalp, face and neck massaged as well.
A visit to the hairdresser can be a long elaborate affair. The hair wash and massage can take up a lot of time.
Some hairdressers in Chongqing will also clean your ears. Be careful though - they clean deep!
Also you may be lucky enough to get a massage whilst eating at a restaurant. Your neck might be done whilst waiting for your
food!
A variation is to have a "Blind Massage".
A person who has lost their sight often excels in other senses such as touch.
Blind massages are quite common in China. Often you will get a better massage because these masseurs are very skilled.
