Chinese Birth Calendar
The Chinese Birth Calendar is a predictor of the gender of a baby.
It is known by many names such as the Chinese Birth Chart, or the Chinese Conception Calendar, or the Chinese Lunar Calendar Pregnancy Predictor, or the Chinese Lunar Calendar Baby Predictor, or the Chinese Gender Prediction Calendar or just the Chinese Fertility Calendar.
Quite simply you put in the month of the date of conception and the age of a mother at the time of conception, look up the table and it will tell you whether it will be a boy or girl. Couples can plan ahead.
If they want a daughter, they can consult the calendar and plan accordingly and likewise if they want a son.
As simple as that – if you believe it. However - many people do and practice accordingly!
The Chinese Birth Calendar is steeped in history and mythology.
According to legend it was developed by a scientist thousands of years ago.
There is an actual birth calendar which was buried in a tomb near Beijing for many years. It is now in the Institute of Science in Beijing. It probably was developed and refined over time as observations were made of births and the associated gender.
The Chinese Birth Chart is based on the Chinese Lunar Year.
Because the Chinese Lunar Year varies according to when the new moon is, the months will not line up exactly with the western calendar.
Also the Chinese Lunar Year has a leap month every two or three years which also varies the date a little.
In addition, the age of the mother is the Chinese lunar age which is not the anniversary of the date of birth. It is the number of Chinese lunar years that a person has lived and increases by one at the time of the Chinese New Year. So a person born in Novemeber or December will be one year old soon after birth as the Chinese New Year occurs in January or February.
So it is not as simple as using Western Calendar dates and ages!
Influencing a baby’s gender was very important to many Chinese in the past where there was a preference for a boy over a girl.
This was probably due to (as in other parts of the world) the use of males as labor in agriculture when China was largely a rural society.
Many people now use scientific methods such as the ultrasound to determine the gender of a baby. For these people, the Chinese Birth Calendar is a novelty.
However it was very important to the Chinese in past times, and is still relied upon by some.
