There is an abundance of hotels and guest houses in China.

They vary in standard from very basic to 5 star.

You need to decide if you want to stay in a Western style hotel or a Chinese Hotel.

The major Hotel Chains such as the Holiday Inn, Hilton and so on are found in the major cities. They are generally 4 or 5 star hotels.

Chinese hotels range from 5 star to basic. It depends on what you want. Even the basic hotels are simple and adequate.

I stayed in several Chinese hotels in smaller provincial towns and they were quite okay.

The only problem may be that if you are a non smoker, you will smell stale cigarette smoke in most rooms. No such thing as non smoking rooms.

It would be a good idea to take some air freshener!

Hotel Services

If you have no or little knowledge of Chinese I would advise you to stay in a Western Hotel such as the Holiday Inn, Hilton or Intercontinental.

The services that these hotels provide will make your stay in China much easier. Staff usually have some knowledge of English and are very helpful.

Services that hotels provide are:

Business Center - you can buy phonecards, post packages, make international calls, send faxes and many other such related things

Internet - often in the Business Center

Western restaurants and bars

Arrange almost anything you need eg interpreter services

Gymnasium

Swimming Pool

Entertainment such as live bands

Events for special occasions such as at Christmas

Finding Hotels

Your travel agent will help you to find somewhere to stay. The Internet can be helpful.
