About me and Sichuan!

What is it about me that enables me to tell you about Sichuan China from a Westerner's viewpoint?

Well, I spent two wonderful years (2005-2007) living and working in Chongqing, China.

I also returned to Sichuan in 2008 for a visit and a catch up with my old Chinese friends.

And I am returning in 2009 again. It is like a second home for me!

I worked as an adviser on a joint Australian Chinese Government Education project in several Chinese schools. I worked closely with the Chinese, attended many banquets and travelled with them.

I also made several close Chinese friends.

Me in ChongqingThe Chinese people of Chongqing are extremely friendly.

They were also very curious about me and other Westerners because Chongqing is not a place where a lot of Westerners go.

In fact people throughout Sichuan are friendly and keen to show off their country and culture.

I ate in restaurants with the Chinese, drank in bars with them and was invited into their homes.

I also travelled throughout parts of China as well and especially in Sichuan.

Of course I did the Great Wall of China, the Terracotta Warriors, Beijing and Shanghai - all magnificent places!

But I also saw many lesser known places in Sichuan and Chongqing that are certainly worthwhile to see.

I will provide you with information that makes your visit to Sichuan more enjoyable.

I am not going to replace a travel guide - rather I want to provide some insights, some of them unusual, that I have learnt.

For example:

  • Why is red a lucky colour in China?
  • Why is the dragon a revered symbol?
  • Is a hot pot really hot?
  • Are the Chinese really superstitious?
and many other things.

Through my work I got a unique insight into the life and culture of Sichuan.

Me at a Chongqing schoolThis picture of me was taken at one of the schools in Chongqing.

It was quite a good school but despite the modern apartment blocks in the background, the school was getting a bit dated.

While I was there, the Chinese government built a magnificent large new modern school as part of a technology precinct.

The only thing was it was about 30 kilometers from this school. The whole school population (teachers and about 5,000 students) just moved to the new school. The students who lived on campus just relocated.

There were no complaints, no negativity.

They just did it!

That is China today - nothing is impossible.

I hope you find my experience interesting and useful should you decide to visit Sichuan.
